She articulated how Patil’s genuine nature and commitment to each role she embraced left a profound legacy, motivating countless performers and creating an unforgettable impact on Indian cinema. On Friday, Das took to her Instagram account and composed a touching message on Patil’s birthday. Accompanying several of her photographs, the filmmaker expressed, “Today marks the birthday of Smita Patil. This day holds a special place in my heart as an admirer of her craft, someone who grew up captivated by her films and was profoundly affected by the authenticity she infused into every character she portrayed.”

“However, my connection with her extends beyond admiration. Approximately 25 years ago, I first encountered her elder sister, Anita Patil-Deshmukh. Naturally, our conversation gravitated towards Smi, the name affectionately used by her family and close friends. Back then, I received numerous compliments suggesting I bore a resemblance to her. I was convinced that the similarity was merely limited to my skin tone and the fact that I also acted in independent films.”

Nandita Das continued, “In our initial meeting, Tai (now my beloved sister) broke down in tears and embraced me, saying I reminded her so much of Smi. Over the years, I’ve come to understand her not just as an actress but as a person, and my love and admiration for her have only intensified. Today, I feel as though I truly knew her! Although I never met her, through her sister and now mine, I share a profound connection with her.”

She concluded her post by stating, “Yet, Anita Tai is not solely defined by her relationship with Smita Patil (though that is a true privilege!). She is a distinguished physician, social worker, public health expert, and the most incredible sister anyone could wish for. Thank you, Tai, for being part of my life. Today, we celebrate the remarkable person Smi was and the gifts she bestowed upon the cinematic world. It’s no coincidence that the lead female character in my upcoming film is named Smi, and yes, her full name is Smita!.”

Recognized as one of the most outstanding actresses in Indian cinema, Smita Patil was celebrated for her unconventional portrayals of resilient and independent women. Her impactful career was heartbreakingly cut short when she passed away on December 13, 1986.
