Christopher Nolan on Matt Damon's tattoo: 'Not you as well'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Filmmaker Christopher Nolan has disclosed the story behind Matt Damon's arm tattoo — and it turns out the 55-year-old actor simply assumed his days of baring a bare bicep on screen were behind him. The revelation came as Nolan prepares for the release of his upcoming Greek epic 'The Odyssey', in which Damon plays the lead role of Odysseus.
The Tattoo Discovery
Speaking to Amy Poehler on her Good Hang podcast, Nolan recounted the moment at Damon's first wardrobe fitting when the actor removed his shirt to reveal a 'tasteful' inking in cursive script along the top of his arm. The tattoo bears the name of Damon's wife Luciana and their four daughters — Alexia, 27; Isabella, 20; Gia, 17; and Stella, 15.
Nolan, who had already been dealing with the challenge of covering body art on the supporting cast and younger crew members, was caught off guard. 'I had a moment with him at his first wardrobe fitting because we'd be fitting all of the supporting cast, all the guys who play his crew and some younger actors and everything, and they all come in and they've all got tattoos. Which is a nightmare for a period film,' he said.
What Nolan Said on the Podcast
The director did not hold back on the practical headache tattoos create on a period production. 'It means hours of make-up. You have to cover all that up and then put the costume on, and then rain and wind and the costume will rub it away. (Matt) takes his shirt off at the fitting, and he's got a f** tattoo. And I was like, 'Not you as well'. Like, what?' he recalled.
Damon's explanation, however, quickly won the director over. Nolan recounted: 'He said to me, 'Well, if I'm to be perfectly honest, I thought my bare bicep days were over'. And I said, 'Okay. Fair enough. The truth is, I think they're just beginning'.' As a result, Damon reportedly spent 'a little extra time in the chair' during the shoot for touch-ups.
Why Nolan Chose Damon for Odysseus
Despite the tattoo inconvenience, Nolan said Damon was the first name that came to mind when casting the iconic role. 'I actually don't think about actors when I'm writing. I try not to. I try to really just live through the characters in the writing process, then come out the other side and go, 'How is this gonna work? Who are we getting for this?' And Matt immediately popped into my head,' he said.
Nolan was specifically looking for an actor with the 'empathetic ability to draw the audience into a character's dilemma' — and felt Damon's range across films like Good Will Hunting, The Martian, We Bought a Zoo, and the Jason Bourne franchise made him uniquely suited. 'He has that openness. He brings the audience with him. But he also can project an iconic, frankly, superhero presence,' Nolan added.
Damon's Physical Transformation for The Odyssey
Damon had previously revealed the extent of his physical preparation for the film. Speaking to Jason and Travis Kelce on their New Heights podcast earlier this year, he said Nolan wanted him 'lean but strong', which led to a strict dietary overhaul. 'I stopped eating gluten,' Damon said, adding that he dropped from his usual walking weight of between 185 and 200 pounds down to 167 pounds — a figure he said he had not seen since high school. The transformation involved both intensive training and a tightly controlled diet throughout the production.
With 'The Odyssey' gearing up for release, the behind-the-scenes anecdotes are already generating considerable buzz ahead of what is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of the year.
