Actor Prakash Raj has opened up about his role as Shastri in the upcoming Prime Video streaming series 'Jagamae Sangeetham', revealing that his character's rigid discipline stems not from arrogance but from a deep-seated fear of watching a generational musical legacy dissolve. The trailer of the series was unveiled on Tuesday, 25 August, offering audiences a first look at a story rooted in Carnatic music, family conflict, and the tension between tradition and self-expression.

Prakash Raj on What Drew Him to Shastri

Speaking about the character, Prakash Raj said, 'What fascinated me about Shastri was that, beneath all his discipline and conviction, he is a father trying to protect everything he holds dear. He's not driven by ego as much as by fear of losing a legacy that has defined generations before him. That emotional complexity, as well as the opportunity to explore how music can heal, divide, and ultimately bring people together, drew me to this role.'

The candour in that framing is notable — Shastri is positioned not as an antagonist but as a man whose love for tradition has curdled into control, a nuance that Prakash Raj, known for layered performances across Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi cinema, appears well-suited to carry.

The World of Vaikuntapuram

Set in the fictional temple town of Vaikuntapuram, the series follows two contrasting worlds. At the centre is Balu, the gifted grandson of revered musician Shastri Garu, who struggles to uphold a celebrated musical lineage while simultaneously searching for his own artistic voice. The series is inspired by the Hindi streaming hit 'Bandish Bandits', and transposes that template into a Telugu cultural milieu anchored by Carnatic classical music.

The show is created and directed by Palnati Surya Pratap and produced by Sushmita Konidela under the banner of Gold Box Entertainment.

The series features an ensemble that includes Meka Srikanth, Madhubala, Akshay Lagusani, and Sushmita Shetty in lead roles, alongside Suman, Sijju Menon, Shafi, Jhansi, Raghu Babu Yerra, Rocket Raghava, Nagi Jabardasth, Mirchi Kiran, Keshav Deepak, Priyanka Nalkari, Manik Reddy, Prachi Thaker, and Roopa Lakshmi in key supporting parts.
