Raghubir Yadav: 'Salaam Bombay' was my hardest role in 40-year career
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Veteran actor Raghubir Yadav has revealed that his debut film 'Salaam Bombay' remains the most challenging role of his career, which now spans more than four decades. The actor made the candid admission during promotional activities in Mumbai for his new streaming series 'Hunkkaar – The Roar', appearing alongside co-stars Fatima Sana Shaikh and Zoya Hussain.
The Theatre-to-Cinema Leap
Yadav, who built his craft through years of stage performance, said the transition from theatre to film was nothing short of disorienting. 'Salaam Bombay' confronted him with a fundamental difference between the two mediums — the unforgiving eye of the camera.
'My first film 'Salaam Bombay' was the most difficult for me. I had a lot of experience in theatre but the language of cinema is very different. It was a completely different world for me as I was coming from the background of theatre. I found that you can lie a little in the theatre, but you can't lie in front of the camera. The camera will catch even the smallest of things,' he said. He also noted that he followed that experience with 'Raman Raghav' in 1992, working with director Sriram Raghavan.
A Career-Long Quest for Creative Satisfaction
Despite being one of Indian cinema's most respected character actors, Yadav confessed to an enduring sense of creative incompleteness. 'I have never been creatively satisfied, especially in films because you can still improvise in theatre after a play. But in cinema, there is no scope for improvisation once the edit is locked. I haven't been able to go beyond 60-65% in terms of creative satisfaction. I want to reach 90% in my entire life,' he said.
Rather than viewing this gap as a failure, Yadav frames it as the engine that has kept him working. 'I have never set goals. It's fun to make a path, keep walking, and to keep learning,' he added. Notably, this philosophy of restless self-examination has made him one of few actors of his generation who has remained creatively active across parallel cinema, mainstream Bollywood, and now the streaming space.
About 'Hunkkaar – The Roar'
The series that brings Yadav back to the spotlight is 'Hunkkaar – The Roar', directed by Karan D. Kapadia and Nitya Mehra. Set against a world of power, faith, and institutional influence, it centres on a 17-year-old named Meenu Rawat whose accusation against a spiritual figure ignites a high-stakes investigation and a courtroom battle.
Actress Aneet Padda, who broke out with the film 'Saiyaara', plays Meenu Rawat. Fatima Sana Shaikh essays ACP Jasleen Singh Soin, while Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Raghubir Yadav, Ram Kapoor, and Arjun Mathur appear in pivotal roles. The series is backed by Applause Entertainment, Birla Studios, and Purple Pebble Pictures.
The show is currently streaming on JioHotstar and has received a positive response from audiences. With questions of faith, power, and justice at its core, the series arrives at a time when institutional accountability is a dominant theme in Indian public discourse.
