Paresh Rawal and RGV Critique Filmmakers of Over-the-Top Cinema
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 20 (NationPress) Renowned veteran actor Paresh Rawal and respected filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma are criticizing those filmmakers who have thrived on creating ‘over the top cinema’.
On Friday, RGV expressed his views on X, formerly Twitter, sharing an extensive note directed at Hindi cinema creators who continue to depend on outdated clichés to appease market demands without innovating.
He stated, “The @Dhurandhar2 is a NIGHTMARE. It serves as a nightmare for all filmmakers who have amassed wealth and fame through simplistic, exaggerated cinema. The type of cinema that required audiences to leave their intellect at the door. The cinema inundated with LOUDNESS and MASALA, which is now on the brink of extinction. #Dhurandhar2 is bound to terrify every filmmaker who still venerates the archetypal hero. In #Dhurandhar2, @RanveerOfficial obliterated the heroes who never experience wounds or pain, and from the ruins of such obsolete heroes, he has birthed a genuinely relatable hero—flawed yet perilous, whose heroism arises from actions rather than being force-fed through ear-splitting music.”
However, the film has sparked outrage among certain audience segments, with claims that it serves as blatant propaganda in favor of the BJP government, especially regarding the controversial Demonetization issue. Viewers argue that the film glosses over the collective suffering of Indians who endured long lines to exchange old currency in 2016.
He elaborated, “In contrast to this new kind of hero, the Godly heroes will appear ludicrous, akin to circus clowns. Their adoring fans will feel exposed and frightened upon witnessing the box office success of #Dhurandhar2, which will petrify those who constructed their careers on action sequences where physics is a mere joke and gravity nonexistent. Scenes depicting men hurled fifty feet into the air, bouncing off the ground like rubber balls, surviving city-destroying explosions, yet still delivering punchy dialogues while dusting off their shoulders will be hunted down by the new audience.”
He mentioned that once the audience witnesses action that genuinely inflicts pain and blood, the exaggerated flying villain trope will seem cheap, artificial, and embarrassingly absurd. Filmmakers who continue to use wires and cranes to feign hero elevation will find themselves waking up in cold sweats. He believes that this will leave pan-India directors quaking in their seats, particularly those who still think characters are crafted through hairstyles, costumes, photo-shopped abs, and designer outfits instead of intrinsic psychological depth. When the audience of #Dhurandhar2 sees a hero whose strength comes from intellect rather than muscles, the hair and costume-driven cinema will resemble a kindergarten dress-up play.
He continued, “‘Dhurandhar 2’ is not merely a film; it is a judgment. With Dhurandhar 2, @AdityaDharFilms has severed the head of that cinema which disrespected audience intelligence, replacing substantive storytelling with gaudy visuals, and transforming heroes into deities while the audience morphed into sheep. The box office collections of #Dhurandhar2 are currently entombing the outdated beliefs of earlier filmmakers so deeply that even their spirits cannot escape.”
“The wails you hear regarding #Dhurandhar2's box office success signify the collective announcement of their demise. If the creators of such films, currently in production or about to commence shooting, do not revisit their strategies and cleanse their minds by watching #Dhurandhar2 repeatedly, not even GOD can rescue their SPIRITS. But the issue remains, even if they wish to do so, they may possess ample funds, but where will they acquire the intellect of @AdityaDharFilms?” he added.
Paresh Rawal responded to RGV's comments, tagging a user who criticized the film. He remarked, “Roll over and burn. ha ha ha.”
When the user warned the actor that such comments might tarnish his legacy, he replied, “I care little about YOUR opinion regarding the film or predictions about my legacy. Now don’t flounder like a lizard with a severed tail! Just put on your collar and return to your cage (sic).”
