Mumbai, March 21 (NationPress) Actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran, who is preparing for the release of his upcoming action thriller L2: Empuraan, concurs that Malayalam cinema is in an exceptionally prosperous phase. Nevertheless, he emphasized that remarkable films are being produced across various industries.

In a dialogue with IANS, he elaborated on how Malayalam cinema excels in exploring diverse genres. Prithviraj stated: “Indeed, I believe that Malayalam cinema is experiencing a remarkable phase. We have been consistently creating outstanding films and exceptional content for years, and I hope this period is everlasting.”

When queried about why other film industries aren't achieving similar success, Prithviraj expressed a different viewpoint.

“However, I contest the notion that Malayalam is the sole industry producing excellent cinema. Exceptional films are being crafted everywhere. I acknowledge that Malayalam is in an exceptionally prosperous phase. I agree,” he remarked.

He reminisced about a time when filmmakers were astonished by Hindi cinema's prowess.

“Not too long ago, we were observing Hindi cinema, questioning how they accomplished this. How did they manage to create such groundbreaking content? When Ram Gopal Varma emerged and dramatically transformed mainstream filmmaking, it left us in awe, thinking, ‘Wow, Bollywood has really cracked the code.’”

“When Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, along with other modern filmmakers, entered the Hindi film scene, conversations in Kerala revolved around, ‘Wow, how is Hindi cinema achieving this?’”

“Now, similar discussions are happening about Malayalam cinema, and I hope this dialogue persists indefinitely,” the actor expressed.

He wishes for every film industry to sooner or later recognize their unique strengths.

“Remarkable cinema is being produced everywhere, and I hope that each industry quickly identifies its own strengths and creates films that truly reflect their capabilities.”

He emphasized that Malayalam cinema has consistently valued the role of writers, whom he regards as the foundation of cinema.

“One aspect I particularly appreciate in Malayalam cinema is that we have never overlooked the importance of writers, who are the bedrock of cinema. Even in the documentary I viewed, I recalled that during the 70s and 80s, Bollywood’s greatest superstars were Mr. Salim and Mr. Javed. Perhaps there is a lesson to be learned there.”

L2: Empuraan, also known as L2E, is an action thriller featuring Mohanlal. It is the second part of a planned trilogy, following the 2019 film Lucifer. The film is co-produced by Lyca Productions and Aashirvad Cinemas and is scheduled for release on March 27.

It also includes Prithviraj, Indrajith Sukumaran, Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier, Saniya Iyappan, Saikumar, Baiju Santhosh, Fazil, and Sachin Khedekar reprising their roles from the original.
