Richa Chadha, Ali Fazal pair up on screen for first time in Delhi comedy
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actress Richa Chadha has spoken about sharing screen space with her husband Ali Fazal as a romantic pair for the very first time, in director Shashie Vermaa's upcoming untitled situational comedy set in Delhi. The film, backed by Scenework Productions and Giriraj Productions, is scheduled to begin production in the latter half of 2026 and is slated for a theatrical release in April 2027.
Richa on the script and the Delhi connection
Describing what drew her to the project, Richa said, 'The screenplay has a certain ease to it that instantly drew me in. It finds humour in everyday situations without trying too hard, and beneath all the laughter there's something meaningful being said about people and society.'
The Delhi setting also carries personal resonance for the actress. 'Returning to a story set in Delhi brought back a lot of personal memories for me because I spent my early school years there. And while Ali and I have appeared in the same films before, we've never explored a relationship like this on screen. He's an instinctive performer, and I'm looking forward to discovering this new equation together,' she added.
Ali Fazal on comedy, character, and the collaboration
Ali, equally enthusiastic, spoke about the film's grounded approach to humour. 'Comedy is at its best when it comes from people who feel real, not exaggerated. What I loved about this film is that every character has flaws, quirks and emotional truth, which makes the humour land so much better,' he said.
On working opposite Richa as an on-screen pair for the first time, Ali noted, 'Working opposite Richa in a story where we're actually paired together is something we've never done before despite all these years of knowing each other professionally. That makes this experience genuinely exciting.' He also expressed admiration for the director: 'I've admired the way Shashie sir observes everyday life and translates it into cinema, so getting the opportunity to collaborate with him was an easy yes.'
The film and its cast
Although Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal previously appeared together in the popular Fukrey franchise, they were never cast as a pair in those films. This untitled project marks the first time the real-life couple will be portrayed in a romantic equation on screen. Acclaimed actor Kumud Mishra also features in a key role.
Helmed by actor-writer-director Shashie Vermaa, the film draws on the vibrant and chaotic energy of Delhi as its backdrop — a city Vermaa is known for capturing with authenticity. Notably, this is the first time the director will work with both leads together.
What to expect
With a shoot window opening in the second half of 2026, audiences can expect the film to arrive in cinemas around April 2027. Given the real-life chemistry between the leads and the grounded comedic sensibility described by both actors, the project is already generating considerable curiosity ahead of its formal announcement.
