Sankgeetha Vijay Initiates Divorce from Actor Vijay, Citing Adultery
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 27 (NationPress) Sankgeetha Vijay, the spouse of the renowned actor and politician Vijay, has submitted a petition for divorce in the Chengalpattu district court, citing Vijay's "adulterous affair" with an actress as the primary cause.
Sankgeetha Vijay is seeking the annulment of her marriage under sections 27(a), (b), (d) and Sections 36 and 37 of the Special Marriage Act 1954.
The Chengalpattu family court has issued a notice to actor Vijay, requiring his personal appearance on April 20.
In her petition, Sankgeetha, a UK citizen with a BSc in Biomedical Science from London, mentioned that their marriage was initially registered in the UK on July 10, 1998. Subsequently, a ceremonial wedding was performed according to Hindu customs on August 25, 1999 at Rajah Muthiah Mandram in Chennai.
Initially, the couple enjoyed a harmonious relationship, but in April 2021, Sankgeetha discovered Vijay's ongoing adulterous relationship with an actress. This revelation caused her significant emotional distress and feelings of betrayal, violating the trust essential in their marriage.
Although Vijay promised to terminate the affair, Sankgeetha claims he continued the extramarital involvement without any remorse. Furthermore, she alleged that in 2024, Vijay's persistent adulterous behavior and social media controversies inflicted continuous psychological pain on her.
She argued that their marital bond had effectively dissolved, existing only on paper, and thus she sought its formal dissolution.
Sankgeetha also requested the court to grant her the right to reside in their matrimonial home in Neelankarai until her petition is resolved or until Vijay provides her with suitable alternative accommodation. Additionally, she requested that the court order Vijay to pay fair and adequate permanent alimony and cover the legal costs of the proceedings.
