Are Sean Baker and Michelle Yeoh Collaborating on an Exciting New Film?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, Feb 5 (NationPress) Renowned Hollywood director Sean Baker and acclaimed actress Michelle Yeoh are collaborating on a thrilling new film that will have its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival later this month.
The film, titled ‘Sandiwara’, signifies a return for the director of ‘Anora’ to his roots in iPhone filmmaking. The project is described as an “immersive cinematic experience”, according to reports from ‘Variety’.
This project is being developed in partnership with the London-based fashion label Self-Portrait. It represents the inaugural film from Self-Portrait’s Residency initiative, which was launched last year to encourage creatives from various disciplines to design with their unique styles, as outlined in the release.
This initiative aims to provide Self-Portrait’s “infrastructure, platforms, resources, teams, and distribution network” to highlight and promote external creatives, granting them the freedom to innovate and create.
According to ‘Variety’, Yeoh portrays five distinct characters set against the backdrop of a Malaysian night market.
The film's synopsis reveals that it “transcends fashion, delving into cinema and storytelling to encapsulate the essence of Malaysian culture. Each character conveys a unique narrative, showcasing aspects of Malaysian culture that are seldom explored”.
The title derives from the Malay word for “drama, theatrical performance, or play” and was filmed in Penang.
A special screening of ‘Sandiwara’ will occur at the Berlin Film Festival on February 13, followed by a discussion featuring the director and the actress. Additionally, Baker will attend the Berlinale’s opening ceremony on February 12 to present Yeoh with this year’s Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement. The Berlin Film Festival is scheduled from February 12 to February 22, 2026.
