Suhail Nayyar on Rishi and Ranbir Kapoor: 'Very different personalities'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actor Suhail Nayyar, currently promoting his upcoming film 'Udta Teer', has opened up about his experiences working alongside two generations of the Kapoor family — the late Rishi Kapoor and his son Ranbir Kapoor — describing the father and son as having completely contrasting personalities and working styles.
Two Generations, Two Different Worlds
Suhail, speaking during the promotional circuit for 'Udta Teer' in Mumbai, said that while both actors brought distinct energy to the set, the generational gap between them made for very different professional dynamics. 'They are very different, and there is a difference. Age also plays a role, the kind of equation and comfort that someone like me could have with Ranbir, can't have with Rishi Kapoor sir,' he said.
Suhail worked with Rishi Kapoor on the streaming film 'Sharmaji Namkeen' and has since shared the screen with Ranbir Kapoor in the highly anticipated 'Ramayana: Part 2'.
The Unusual Filmmaking of 'Sharmaji Namkeen'
'Sharmaji Namkeen' occupies a singular place in Hindi cinema history. The film featured two actors — Rishi Kapoor and Paresh Rawal — portraying the same lead character, after Rishi Kapoor passed away in 2020 before the project could be completed. The production decision to continue with Paresh Rawal stepping into the role was widely seen as a heartfelt tribute to the late actor.
Reflecting on the rare acting challenge it presented, Suhail said, 'I did the same scene with Rishi sir, and then I got the opportunity to work with Paresh Rawal for the same scene.' He elaborated: 'I was responding like my character to my father, Sharma ji. So, the actor in front of me will have a different choice, and naturally their processes will be different. So, I was responding to both of them. As an actor, I never felt jarring. It was a learning experience. It was a very good film, and I was very lucky to be a part of something like that.'
Rishi Kapoor: Not Intimidating, But Unforgettable
When asked whether the veteran star was an intimidating presence on set, Suhail was quick to dispel the notion. 'No, not at all. He used to talk about food. All the time, and his shooting experiences,' he recalled with evident warmth. Suhail described their conversations as candid exchanges where he would share his admiration for Rishi Kapoor's illustrious career — moments of connection that clearly left a lasting impression on the younger actor.
What's Next for Suhail Nayyar
With 'Udta Teer' set for release, Suhail is stepping into a new chapter of his career. His association with 'Ramayana: Part 2', one of the most high-profile productions in recent Bollywood memory, alongside Ranbir Kapoor, is also expected to significantly raise his profile. The contrasting experiences with both Kapoors, he suggests, have been formative to his growth as a performer.
