Mumbai, Sep 13 (NationPress) The late actor Sunil Dutt once shared insights about his mother’s highly conservative nature, expressing concerns that her beliefs might hinder his union with the late actress Nargis Dutt.
A recently unearthed clip from the show ‘Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai,’ hosted by Farooq Sheikh, features him narrating the moment he proposed to Nargis.
He recounted, “I owned a Fiat, and I told her I would take her to Marine Drive. She casually agreed, and as I drove, I took a turn and said, ‘I have something to share with you’. She replied, ‘Yes, Birju,’—a name she used for me. I then said, ‘I want to marry you.’ Those were my exact words. She fell silent. I continued driving, unsure of what to say next since she hadn’t responded. After dropping her off at Marine Drive, I resolved that if she didn’t say yes, I would return to my village and become a farmer.”
He further elaborated, “I feared facing humiliation. One night, I returned home to find my sister laughing. She said, ‘Congratulations!’ I was confused and asked her, ‘For what?’ She revealed that I hadn’t informed her that Nargis accepted my proposal.”
Sunil was bewildered and inquired further. His sister informed him that Nargis wanted him to discuss their marriage with their mother. He recalled, “My mother is incredibly conservative. I told her that if she permitted it, I would marry Nargis.”
“She responded, ‘I have not lived your life; you have shaped it yourself. I trust you won’t make mistakes in your life, and that’s how it all began,’” he added.
Sunil Dutt and Nargis exchanged vows on March 11, 1958, in a modest ceremony, followed by a reception attended by close friends from the industry.
