Supreme Court Petitioned by 'The Kerala Story 2' Creators After Kerala HC Issues Release Stay
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, February 26 (NationPress) The producers of the highly anticipated film ‘The Kerala Story 2 – Goes Beyond’ have petitioned the Supreme Court following an interim stay order issued by the Kerala High Court regarding the film's release on Thursday.
The Kerala High Court observed that there seemed to be a lack of thorough consideration by the Censor Board in certifying the film.
Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas issued the stay while presiding over two petitions that questioned the film’s release. The court indicated that the guidelines designed to maintain social harmony were seemingly not adhered to by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Originally scheduled for release on Friday, ‘The Kerala Story 2 – Goes Beyond’ faced this legal hurdle. In a statement submitted on Wednesday, producer Vipul Shah emphasized that only the censor board holds the jurisdiction to impede a film’s release.
This sequel follows the acclaimed ‘The Kerala Story,’ which won a National Award and premiered in 2023. The narrative centers around three young women who purportedly become involved in misleading marriages and are allegedly subjected to forced conversions.
Previously, it was reported that the teaser for ‘The Kerala Story 2 – Goes Beyond’ was briefly published online before being removed from official social media platforms, sparking renewed discussion about the already controversial franchise.
The production company behind the film, Sunshine Pictures, has addressed rumors regarding the teaser's removal. They released an official statement categorically denying the claims and termed them as false and misleading.
“Sunshine Pictures wishes to clarify that the circulating news about the teaser's removal for ‘The Kerala Story 2 – Goes Beyond’ is entirely unfounded and misleading. The matter is currently sub judice, and no court has issued any order to remove any content. We have not taken down or deleted any materials,” the statement read.
The original ‘The Kerala Story’ received significant attention, facing intense scrutiny, legal challenges, and political reactions due to its portrayal of sensitive social issues.
