Udta Teer release date shifted to October 23 from October 9
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ayushmann Khurrana's upcoming patriotic comedy 'Udta Teer' will now release on October 23, two weeks later than its originally announced date of October 9. The makers unveiled a fresh poster on Friday confirming the revised date, citing a cleaner release window and a stronger theatrical runway as the key reasons for the shift.
Why the Release Was Pushed
According to the production team, the decision to move the date was driven by a crowded multiplex calendar in early October. Films including 'Drishyam: The Conclusion' and 'The Vvaan: Force of the Forrest' had occupied considerable screen space, and waiting for their theatrical runs to wind down gives 'Udta Teer' a better shot at wider screen count and improved audience footfall.
What the Film Is About
Described as India's first patriotic comedy, 'Udta Teer' casts Ayushmann Khurrana as Bilal Ahmed, a Pakistani spy who suffers memory loss on Indian soil and gradually begins to believe he is Indian. In a quirky dramatic irony, his character remembers patriotism but forgets which country he owes it to.
Suhail Nayyar is reportedly playing a negative character in the film, adding a thriller edge to the comedy-drama blend.
Ayushmann on the Film's Appeal
Khurrana has spoken enthusiastically about the project in interviews. 'My film 'Udta Teer' is releasing on October 9. It is a very different story. I want to say that it is India's first patriotic comedy where I become a Pakistani spy and lose my memory in India,' he said. 'My character in the film starts fighting for India. So in a way, he remembers patriotism, but he forgets which country it is. So it's a very beautiful story,' he added.
On the creative draw of the project, Khurrana noted, 'Every new director brings a different energy to the set. With 'Udta Teer' what drew me in was not just the genre, but the world Akash had created.' He described the script as rare for managing to be 'chaotic, funny, emotional and rooted in a larger idea at the same time.'
What to Expect at the Box Office
The two-week delay is a strategic call common in Bollywood when a new release risks screen dilution. The October 23 slot now positions 'Udta Teer' with breathing room ahead of the festive post-Diwali stretch, typically a strong period for mid-to-large Hindi films. Whether the genre — a niche blend of espionage and comedy — can draw numbers comparable to Khurrana's past hits like 'Andhadhun' or 'Bala' remains to be seen.
