Vijay Antony's 'Nooru Saami' to release worldwide on 19 June
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Director Sasi's much-anticipated Tamil drama 'Nooru Saami', starring actor-composer Vijay Antony in the lead, will open in cinemas worldwide on 19 June 2025, the makers announced on Wednesday. The film, which reunites the director-actor duo behind the cult blockbuster 'Pichaikkaran', will release simultaneously in Telugu as 'Vanda Devullu'.
Release date confirmed
Vijay Antony took to his X timeline to unveil the release-date poster, writing, ‘#NooruSaami and #VandaDevullu releasing worldwide on June 19th.' Shooting for the project was wrapped in February earlier this year, paving the way for a swift summer rollout.
A story rooted in real life
In an earlier interview, director Sasi had disclosed that 'Nooru Saami' — which translates to ‘Hundred Gods' — draws from real-life incidents and centres on the bond between a mother and her son. The title is borrowed from a hugely popular song in 'Pichaikkaran', though Sasi has clarified that the new film's story has no narrative connection to its predecessor.
Vijay Antony had offered an early glimpse of the project on 14 November last year, posting a picture of himself seated in what appeared to be a sugarcane field and captioning it, ‘#NooruSaami Final Schedule.'
The 'Pichaikkaran' legacy
Expectations around 'Nooru Saami' are anchored in the runaway success of 'Pichaikkaran', the 2016 hit that followed a wealthy businessman who lives as a beggar for 48 days in fulfilment of a vow to save his ailing mother. The film, also based on a real-life incident, struck an emotional chord well beyond Tamil Nadu and went on to attain cult-classic status.
Two heroes, a family connection
Sasi had officially announced his reunion with Vijay Antony at the trailer launch of director Leo John Paul's 'Maargan', describing 'Nooru Saami' as a film very close to his heart. The director revealed that the project features two heroes — Vijay Antony in one lead role and Ajay Dhishan, the actor's nephew, in the other. ‘I remember Ajay as a small child when we were doing Dishyum. He is now a young hero,' Sasi said.
What's next
With the release window locked, the makers are expected to ramp up promotions over the coming days, including a trailer drop and music rollout. A strong opening in Tamil Nadu and the Telugu states could position 'Nooru Saami' as one of the key mid-year Tamil releases of 2025.
