Mumbai, Feb 15 (NationPress) Vinay Sapru's 2016 romantic film "Sanam Teri Kasam", featuring Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane, was recently re-released in theaters on February 7, 2025.
In an exclusive interview with IANS, director Vinay Sapru discussed how they drew inspiration from the 'Shiv Puran' for the narrative of "Sanam Teri Kasam". He stated, "Typically, love stories revolve around a wealthy boy and an impoverished girl or a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl. We aimed to create something unique for this film. While reading the 'Shiv Puran', we discovered our story. We identified the conflict leading to the separation of our main characters. One chapter of 'Shiv Puran' illustrates that 'if a daughter's wedding lacks her father's blessing, even a divine union will falter,' referencing the tale of Shiv and Sati. Conversely, if a father blesses the marriage, it becomes an eternal love story akin to Shiva and Parvati."
He further explained, "In 'Sanam Teri Kasam', when Saru's father states, 'I will perform her pind daan', she weeps and pleads with him not to proceed. Ignoring her, he tells the watchman, 'You should also come for the pind daan food.' He performs the pind daan while she is still alive. Later, when she falls ill, the boy reassures her that 'these matters are inconsequential and I will find the finest doctors to ensure your recovery.' However, she responds, 'Whether it is blessings or a curse, whatever our parents bestow, God affirms it, so regardless of your efforts, I will not survive.'"
Beyond the 'Shiv Puran', "Sanam Teri Kasam" also takes cues from Eric Segal's novel "Love Story".
