Wamiqa Gabbi on DC: 'Chandra rescued a part of me I hadn't met yet'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actress Wamiqa Gabbi, who plays the role of Chandra in director Arun Matheswaran's Tamil film 'DC', says the character transformed her in ways she had not anticipated — rescuing, in her own words, 'a part of me I hadn't met yet.' The film has drawn strong praise from audiences and critics alike since its release, with Gabbi's performance emerging as one of its most celebrated elements.
Wamiqa Gabbi on What Chandra Meant to Her
Overwhelmed by the response to both the film and her portrayal, Gabbi took to Instagram to share a heartfelt note. She wrote: 'The first time Chandra changed my life, nobody knew her but me. The second time, the world did.'
She added: 'In the film, Daas rescues Chandra… gives her the freedom to discover who she truly is. Somewhere along the way, Chandra did the same for me. She rescued a part of me I hadn't met yet… and showed me who I could be.'
Pan-Indian Stars Praise DC
The film's success has attracted appreciation from across the Indian film industry. Telugu star Mahesh Babu called 'DC' 'an original and outstanding film' and congratulated its makers. Pan-Indian star Allu Arjun followed with his own tribute, writing: 'Congratulations to the entire DC team. Highest respect to Arun Matheswaran garu. Anirudh absolute master booster. All the artistes are fabb, especially Wamiqa Gabbi garu and of course, the hero and my director Lokesh Kanagaraj garu, the biggest pillar of support.'
How 'DC' Came Together
Director Arun Matheswaran revealed that the idea had been with him for a long time. He met Lokesh Kanagaraj at a party, pitched the story, and received an immediate 'Okay.' 'It is a gangster story. Chandra meets Parvati on his journey. The film is about how their journey progresses after that,' Matheswaran explained.
On the experience of directing Kanagaraj — himself one of Tamil cinema's most prominent directors — Matheswaran said: 'This is not new to me. I have directed veteran directors Bharathiraja and Selvaraghavan sir too. Dhanush is also a director. Working with directors is easy. Since they know the film well, they quickly understand the director's vision.'
Cast, Crew and Production Details
Lokesh Kanagaraj plays the character Devadas, Wamiqa Gabbi plays Chandra, and actress Sanjana A K plays Parvathi. Music is composed by Anirudh, with cinematography by Mukesh G, editing by G K Prasanna, and art direction by Kannan S. Dialogues are by Arun Matheswaran and Franklin Jacob, with additional screenplay by Arun Ranjan.
Notably, Kanagaraj underwent martial arts training in Thailand for his role — a commitment he made shortly after directing Superstar Rajinikanth's 'Coolie', which released worldwide on 14 August last year. 'DC' continues to hold strong at the box office, and Matheswaran has expressed confidence it will offer audiences 'a new experience' with each viewing.
