One of the most viscerally authentic moments in filmmaker Shyam Benegal's landmark 1977 film 'Bhumika' was not scripted in the conventional sense — it was engineered in real time, with one legendary actor catching another completely unaware. Amrish Puri revealed years later that he actually slapped co-star Smita Patil during filming, without prior warning, to capture a genuinely organic reaction on camera.

What Happened on the Set

The incident came to light when Amrish Puri appeared on the celebrated talk show 'Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai'. Describing the scene, he said: 'In the scene, I stop her from going outside, and she talks back to me. Unable to take this, I had to get up and slap her.' Before the take, Puri reportedly approached director Shyam Benegal with an unusual proposal: 'Sir, what if I actually slap her?' Benegal agreed immediately.

The result, according to Puri, was a reaction that no rehearsal could have produced. 'That reaction has to be seen in the film. That is a natural reaction,' he said. Patil, caught entirely off guard, delivered what became one of the most discussed performances of her career.
