Mumbai, Nov 21 (NationPress) As his film Amar Singh Chamkila approaches the 53rd International Emmys with nominations for TV Movie/Mini-Series and Best Performance, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali reminisced about filming with Diljit Dosanjh at the very location where the controversial singer met his untimely death.
He distinctly recalls the day the crew made their way back to Mehsampur to reenact Chamkila's tragic death scene.
“We were filming the death scene right at the spot where Chamkila was shot,” Imtiaz noted.
He continued, “What amazed us was that everything remained unchanged. The house, the ground outside, even the koti where he had enjoyed lunch before his assassination—everything looked just as it did 34 years ago.”
After gathering narratives from locals, the team pinpointed the exact location where Chamkila fell after being shot.
“Witnessing Diljit portray Chamkila and collapse on that same ground was bizarre, surreal, almost disturbing,” Imtiaz expressed.
However, the film also captured moments of exhilarating joy, Imtiaz shared, highlighting a particular memory that resurfaces whenever he discusses the film.
“The standout feature of this project was the live performances by Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti, particularly in the akhadas. It was challenging but transformed into something truly spectacular,” he remarked.
“With live musicians performing on stage, and Diljit and Parineeti singing live before massive crowds in recreated concert settings across Punjab, the energy was unparalleled. Every note you hear in the film was recorded live—untouched. The music you experience is the same that resonated with us at that moment.”
Imtiaz and Diljit have already embarked on their journey to New York, where the winners will be unveiled on November 24 during a grand ceremony in the Big Apple.
