Mumbai, March 17 (NationPress) Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has disclosed that he selected Punjabi star Diljit Dosanjh for his streaming success film “Amar Singh Chamkila” due to his prowess as a live performer and his understanding of the dynamic energy that arises when engaging with an audience.
During an appearance on Komal Nahta’s Game Changers Podcast, Ali elaborated on the film and its lead actor, detailing how he meticulously designed the musical components, especially the tracks featuring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra.
When discussing the depiction of the original Chamkila songs, Ali shared his inspiration from live performances.
He noted, “As I watched Chamkila’s videos, which remain accessible on YouTube, I noticed how Chamkila and Amar Jyot would both sing and interact with the audience between songs.”
“Since they are performers, they would sing or add commentary, occasionally altering their singing style, which captures the essence of a live performance. In contrast, a recorded performance is static. My goal was to capture the feeling of a live performance.”
Ali further articulated his reasons for casting Diljit in the lead role.
“I wanted Diljit Dosanjh in this film because he embodies a live performer. He understands the energy that resonates when performing live for an audience, and he adjusts his performance accordingly. He has done an incredible job by not only bringing the live performances to life but also emulating Chamkila’s unique style.”
“Amar Singh Chamkila” is a biographical drama chronicling the life of the musician Amar Singh Chamkila. Komal Nahta’s Game Changers is available for streaming on YouTube.
Imtiaz's latest project is a short film titled “Jules”, featured in the anthology “My Melbourne”.
“My Melbourne” consists of four narratives exploring themes of identity and belonging, inspired by real-life events in Melbourne, Australia. The film discusses issues of diversity, sexuality, gender, disability, and race, with each segment directed by Indian filmmakers Onir, Rima Das, Imtiaz Ali, and Kabir Khan.
