Mumbai, Sep 25 (NationPress) The late singer KK, celebrated as the voice of a generation in Hindi cinema, once shared the story of how he received his initial break.
In a video that has recently surfaced, the late artist recounts how music director Vishal Bhardwaj offered him his first opportunity.
He stated in a clip by Lehren, “I arrived in Bombay around 1994-1995. My first song was for Vishal, in Gulzar sahab’s film, ‘Maachis’. That was a significant break for me because it was such a major film to be singing for Gulzar sahab. And Vishal is a wonderful person, a great guy.”
He further elaborated, “I mention he was a nice guy because he was new at that time and willing to take a chance on a newcomer like me. Typically, new music directors prefer established singers. So, when he provided me with this opportunity, I truly appreciated it.”
KK was one of India’s most cherished playback singers, renowned for his soulful and versatile voice. He began his journey with jingles before making his mark in Bollywood, delivering numerous hits across various languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali.
Known for his emotive singing style, KK developed a distinct identity by seamlessly merging rock, pop, and melody. He prioritized music over fame, earning immense respect within the industry.
On May 31, 2022, KK performed at the Nazrul Mancha auditorium in Kolkata for a college fest organized by Gurudas College. The event attracted a massive crowd, reportedly exceeding the venue’s capacity of approximately 2,400 seats. Attendees later highlighted issues with heat and ventilation during the packed concert.
Despite visible discomfort, KK energized the audience with several of his beloved songs. After the concert, he returned to his hotel, where he collapsed and was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. This Kolkata show became his final performance, leaving a poignant memory for fans. His unexpected passing shocked admirers across the nation.
