Banswara, Sep 25 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking to a vast audience in Rajasthan's Banswara on Thursday, drew comparisons between the Congress era and the present reforms under the BJP government, proclaiming that the nation is now participating in a 'GST Savings Festival'.
He accused the Congress of exploiting the populace, reflecting on the state of affairs prior to 2014.
"What caused such dire circumstances? The Congress government was robbing citizens with exorbitant taxes and rampant inflation. Both were at their highest. When you (the people) chose Modi, our (BJP) administration halted this exploitation. That is why the Congress is upset with me today," the Prime Minister articulated.
He elaborated: "During Congress's governance, a product priced at Rs 100 was charged Rs 131 after taxes. By 2017, following the implementation of GST regulations, the cost was slashed to Rs 118. Currently, after GST reforms, that same item is only Rs 105."
"This reflects a savings of Rs 26 compared to the Congress era," PM Modi noted.
The Prime Minister provided relatable examples to showcase the advantages of GST.
"Previously, a pair of shoes worth Rs 500 cost Rs 575, due to Congress's imposition of Rs 75 in taxes. Now, you save Rs 50 on taxes for shoes priced at Rs 500 after GST reforms," he stated.
He also mentioned that the BJP government has eliminated tax slabs for shoes under Rs 500 and further reduced rates for those priced up to Rs 2,500.
He then addressed the aspirations of the common man regarding owning a two-wheeler.
"Under Congress, a motorcycle valued at Rs 60,000 incurred a tax of Rs 19,000. In 2017, with GST's introduction, this was trimmed by Rs 2,000 to 2,500. Following the reforms in September 2022, the tax on the same motorcycle is now merely Rs 10,000. This results in a savings of Rs 9,000 compared to the pre-2014 Congress period.
PM Modi emphasized that GST reforms have lowered household expenses, directly benefiting families.
"As we commence Navratri, this (GST) reform has provided mothers and sisters across India a reason to rejoice. While the savings may appear modest on an individual basis, collectively across crores of families, they hold significant value," he expressed.
