New Delhi, Sep 25 (NationPress) Renowned drag-flicker Rupinder Pal Singh has praised the Hockey India League (HIL) governing council's decision to assume control of the UP Rudras franchise, deeming it an essential move for the league's continuity.
Previously, UP Rudras declared their intention to exit the Hockey India League (HIL) citing financial viability concerns. Subsequently, the HIL Governing Council opted to take over the franchise and oversee its operations until a new owner is identified.
“When the Hockey India Governing Council takes charge of a team, it’s a positive indication. This means no team is withdrawing, and players continue to have opportunities to compete alongside international stars. The most crucial aspect is that the league continues, and if minor issues are managed, it will only expand year after year,” Rupinder stated.
This decision aims to guarantee that UP Rudras players can participate in HIL 2026 and to preserve the league's competitive integrity.
Rupinder, who previously led the Shrachi Bengal Tigers to victory last season and was acquired by SG Pipers for ₹12 lakh, emphasized the significance of financial backing for emerging players and the responsibilities it entails.
“Financial backing for players is crucial. When I know my home situation is stable, I can perform better on the field without stress. This support truly inspires players and enables them to concentrate entirely on the game. The greatest responsibility is maintaining focus, even when earning well; maximizing performance during playtime is essential,” he added.
Meanwhile, young goalkeeper Vivek Lakra, who was signed by Shrachi Bengal Tigers for ₹23 lakh against a starting price of just ₹2 lakh in the mini auction, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I watched the auction with great nerves. I never anticipated my name would go that high, and when it did, I was astonished. It’s incredibly exciting for me. I aim to give my best and learn from the experienced foreign players on the team whenever possible.”
He shared what this move meant for his family and future: “Everyone at home was elated after the auction. Coming from a modest background, this motivates me to keep striving. Starting at the Sports Hostel in Panposh, I didn’t even have my own goalkeeper kit and had to borrow from seniors.
“From those early days to now, this feels monumental, but I know it's only the beginning. My dream is to excel here, seize every chance to learn, and ultimately compete in the Olympics.”
In the women’s auction, Monika emerged as a standout after going unsold last season, becoming the highest-priced Indian player (women) as she was acquired by Shrachi Bengal Tigers for ₹15 lakh.
Reflecting on her journey, she stated, “Last year I was unsold in the league and subsequently dropped from the core national group, which was an emotional period. I believe Hero HIL is a significant platform for every player. There are numerous talented players in the pool, and if they excel here, they will certainly be considered for national camps.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for youngsters, but as a senior player, you also have to re-establish your worth. Competing alongside international players will elevate standards for everyone. This is why I view this league as crucial for all of us.”
