New Delhi, July 16 (NationPress) The recent initiative from the Ministry of Health to implement oil and sugar boards in both workplaces and educational institutions is a significant step towards enhancing awareness of healthy eating across the nation, as stated by an expert on Wednesday.
In an interview with IANS, Dr. Rima Dada, a Professor at AIIMS Delhi, emphasized that this initiative is timely, given the increasing prevalence of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) like obesity and diabetes, particularly among younger populations.
"This initiative is commendable because, over the last few decades, there has been a rise in obesity rates not only in adults but also in children," Dada remarked.
"Diseases typically observed in individuals in their thirties or forties, such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension, are now being diagnosed in younger age groups. This early occurrence of lifestyle-related diseases is directly linked to unhealthy lifestyles and poor dietary habits," the expert elaborated.
Recently, on the social media platform X, the ICMR - National Institute of Nutrition announced that the Ministry of Health has urged all government offices to prominently display Sugar Boards as part of its efforts to promote healthier environments.
The boards feature informative posters and digital displays that highlight the detrimental effects of excessive sugar and oil consumption in popular food items like samosas, kachori, pizza, pakoras, banana chips, burgers, soft drinks, and chocolate pastries.
They also outline the impact of these foods on human health and provide guidance on the recommended intake levels of fats and sugars.
Dada mentioned that AIIMS will also follow suit and install similar boards to support healthcare workers in making healthier choices.
"Our Director, Dr. M. Srinivas, has already initiated the provision of healthier food options in hostel canteens and cafés. We will showcase Oil and Sugar Boards, detailing the calorie and fat content of available food items," Dada noted.
Previously, the FSSAI indicated that this initiative is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a healthier India.
It stated that this innovative behavioral change strategy will aid in addressing the widespread promotion of sugar and oil awareness.
The FSSAI stated on X that these boards are crucial for helping individuals make informed dietary choices and combat obesity, further supporting the Eat Right India (ERI) movement.
In May, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) directed schools to install sugar boards, with health experts noting that this public health measure aligns with global nutrition objectives and will assist India in combating non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, and specific cancers.
