Shillong, May 27 (NationPress) The Health and Family Welfare Department of Meghalaya convened a review meeting on Monday with the Medical Expert Committee (MEC) to evaluate the state's preparedness for Covid-19 in light of emerging national trends, according to an official statement.
A senior official from the Health Department indicated that the meeting, presided over by Sampath Kumar, Principal Secretary and Development Commissioner, focused on assessing the overall situation and the readiness of relevant departments.
The state surveillance officer from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) delivered a presentation outlining the Covid-19 trends in Meghalaya from 2020 to May 2025, detailing the current vaccination status and the public health response systems that are currently in place.
Despite no confirmed Covid-19 cases reported in the state this year, the official emphasized the necessity for enhanced surveillance through increased testing and preparedness.
Post-meeting, all government and private health facilities will be instructed to evaluate and bolster their Covid-19 response capabilities, including ensuring oxygen availability, critical care infrastructure, and protocols for monitoring and managing Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI), Influenza-like Illness (ILI), and fever cases.
Additionally, mandates have been issued to reassess inventories of essential medications and verify the operational status of testing centers across districts.
Sampath Kumar urged for a proactive and preventive approach, stressing the significance of tracking ILI/SARI/fever trends, particularly in high-traffic areas like markets and public institutions. Health facilities have also been directed to revisit and update their internal Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs) and effective protocols from previous Covid-19 waves.
The department reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining vigilance, preventing public panic, and collaborating closely with medical experts and institutions to ensure community safety, as stated by the official. Senior health professionals and representatives from major government and private entities across the state participated in the meeting.
