Two doctors and two nursing officers were suspended on 28 August following the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child at Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, after the family alleged negligence and misconduct during treatment. What Happened

The deceased, Kalpana Mishra, a resident of Hatwa village in Rewa district, was admitted to the hospital's Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at approximately 2:38 am on 26 August. Hospital records indicate she was in critical condition at admission, diagnosed with a term pregnancy complicated by severe pre-eclampsia and related complications. Treatment was initiated as per established protocol, according to the hospital. Both mother and child died during treatment at approximately 11:55 pm the same day.

Suspensions and Preliminary Findings

Following a formal complaint from the family, the Health Department acted swiftly. In the preliminary investigation, Dr Sonal Agarwal of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department and Dr Nidhi Pandey of the Anaesthesia Department were suspended on charges of gross negligence and indiscipline. Two nursing officers were also suspended on allegations of misconduct toward the family.

A video purportedly showing hospital staff holding the woman's hands while she cried for help circulated widely on social media, though its authenticity has not been independently verified. The clip intensified public outrage and pressure on the administration to act.

Government Response

Madhya Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Rajendra Shukla took serious note of the incident and ordered an impartial inquiry. He stated that negligence in the sensitive treatment of patients would not be tolerated and emphasised that both patients and their families must be treated with dignity and that established treatment protocols must be strictly followed.

A committee of senior doctors has been constituted to conduct a thorough probe. Further action will follow once the inquiry committee submits its report.

Post-Mortem and Family

On the request of the family, a joint post-mortem examination of Kalpana Mishra and her unborn child was conducted by a team from the District Hospital and the Medical College. After completion of all legal formalities, both bodies were transported to their native village in a hearse.
