New Delhi, May 22 (NationPress) - On Thursday, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change initiated a comprehensive nationwide campaign aimed at eradicating plastic pollution, in anticipation of World Environment Day.
This significant day is celebrated annually on June 5, with this year's theme being Beat Plastic Pollution. It serves as the UN's primary platform for fostering global awareness and action towards environmental conservation.
The campaign titled 'One Nation, One Mission: End Plastic Pollution' underscores India's steadfast dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability. It aligns with the nation's flagship initiative -- Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).
“The goal of this campaign is to encourage citizens to adopt eco-friendly alternatives, as envisioned by PM Narendra Modi under Mission LiFE. Let's transition from awareness to action collectively by embracing sustainable practices and putting an end to plastic pollution,” stated Bhupender Yadav, the Union Minister for Environment, while unveiling a pre-campaign video on the social media platform X.
Yadav called upon individuals to collectively shift from awareness to action and to embrace sustainable living to combat plastic pollution.
The campaign's focal points include raising awareness and advocating against plastic pollution, reducing the production and consumption of plastic waste—especially single-use plastics—managing plastic waste through segregation, collection, disposal, and recycling, and promoting the development of sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics.
This initiative aims to raise awareness of the dangers posed by plastic pollution and to promote the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives. The objective is to guide people towards more sustainable lifestyles through community education, behavior modification initiatives, and innovation in sustainable materials.
The campaign will feature a variety of activities such as social media initiatives, street plays, public pledges, poster and essay contests, and events like marathons.
Cleanup operations will be organized at various locations including beaches, parks, riversides, educational campuses, tourist destinations, railway stations, and rural areas.
