Fatorda (Goa), Oct 25 (NationPress) In a challenging start to their season, Chennaiyin FC faced a 2-0 loss against Mohun Bagan Super Giant during the inaugural match of the AIFF Super Cup 2025-26 held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Saturday. Under the guidance of Head Coach Clifford Miranda, the team fielded an all-Indian lineup, demonstrating resilience throughout the match despite the unfavorable outcome and showcasing promising signs for future games.

Miranda opted for a solid defense comprising five players, led by Pritam Kotal, who also served as captain, offering protection to goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz. The youthful midfield trio of Jitendra Singh, Jiteshwor Singh, and Lalrinliana Hnamte exhibited both poise and vigor in the center, while Irfan Yadwad and Farukh Choudhary spearheaded the offensive efforts.

The match kicked off under heavy rain, with both teams vying for dominance in the midfield. Chennaiyin's best opportunity in the first half fell to Farukh, who forced a save from keeper Vishal Kaith after an impressive dribble. Sahal Abdul Samad from Mohun Bagan raced toward goal but was thwarted by a last-ditch tackle from Laldinliana Renthlei.

In the 36th minute, Jiteshwor nearly opened the scoring when he capitalized on a corner, but his shot was directly at Kaith, who cleared it away. Shortly after, Mohun Bagan struck first as Jamie Maclaren found the net from a swift counter-attack.

Chennaiyin came out stronger in the second half, with Irfan's header narrowly missing the target. However, against the run of play, Mohun Bagan doubled their lead when Maclaren scored from close range in the 67th minute.

Despite trailing, the Marina Machans showed great determination on the wet pitch, with Nawaz making crucial saves in the final moments to keep the scoreline respectable. Although the match did not yield the desired result, the performance of the all-Indian squad offered many positives as Miranda's side seeks to gain momentum. They will next face East Bengal on Tuesday, October 28, before concluding the group stage against Dempo SC, with both matches scheduled at the GMC Athletic Stadium in Bambolim.
