ISL 2024-25: Chennaiyin FC Set to Make a Comeback Against Mohun Bagan in Kolkata Clash

Chennai, Nov 28 (NationPress) In their seventh away match this season, Chennaiyin FC is determined to reclaim their winning form when they face Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 at the Salt Lake Stadium this Saturday.
Chennaiyin has clashed with Mohun Bagan Super Giant on eight occasions in the ISL, securing victory twice. They have suffered three defeats while two encounters ended in draws.
The Marina Machans triumphed in the corresponding fixture last season with a thrilling 3-2 win, courtesy of a last-minute goal from Irfan Yadwad. Currently, there is a five-point gap between the two teams, but Owen Coyle’s squad can bridge that with a favorable result.
“This is an excellent opportunity for us to return to our best form. We were disappointed with our last result. We created significant opportunities against Kerala, and had a great chance to equalize. However, we conceded some very easy goals from our perspective. We must improve in that regard against Mohun Bagan, as they will challenge us,” Coyle stated during the pre-match press conference in Chennai on Thursday.
“There were over 200 supporters present in Kerala the other night, and I felt for them because we are capable of much more than what we displayed. That’s why it’s crucial for us to go to Mohun Bagan and demonstrate our qualities, both mentally and in terms of our playoff ambitions. These are the venues where you want to compete and win. It’s a significant test, and we are eager for it,” he added.
Chennaiyin has been a leader in chance creation this season in the ISL, with playmaker Connor Shields—who missed the match against Kerala due to illness—topping the charts with 34 chances created over eight games.
“We have been generating numerous chances in the league. Individually, we are performing well, but as a team, we must improve our ability to convert these opportunities into goals,” forward Irfan remarked in a club release on Thursday.
Finally, Coyle confirmed that Shields participated in training on Thursday and could be available for the game on Sunday. Additionally, PC Laldinpuia will return against Mohun Bagan after serving his one-match suspension. The head coach also mentioned that fullback Ankit Mukherjee is progressing towards full recovery and may return to action in the coming weeks.
