Local media reported that at approximately 8:20 a.m. local time, police received an emergency call indicating that a fishing boat had capsized and someone appeared to have drowned near the Akaushi fishing port in Kesennuma. Rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene and retrieved a man in his 70s from the water, but he was declared dead about 40 minutes after reaching the hospital.
The Kesennuma Coast Guard confirmed that the accident involved a 0.6-ton fishing vessel with two individuals on board. Fortunately, the other man sustained no serious injuries. This incident took place in coastal waters approximately 100 meters southwest of the Akaushi fishing port, where poor weather conditions and high waves were reported at the time.
The Kesennuma Coast Guard is currently investigating the cause of this accident.
Earlier in November, at least four people lost their lives when two boats carrying a total of 95 migrants capsized off the coast of the western Libyan city of Al Khums, according to the Libyan Red Crescent.
In a statement on its official Facebook page, the Red Crescent indicated that these two incidents occurred on November 13.
The first boat was carrying 26 Bangladeshi migrants, four of whom perished when the vessel sank. The second boat held 69 illegal migrants, which included two Egyptians and 67 Sudanese, among them eight children.
The Red Crescent reported that its emergency team, in collaboration with the coast guard and port security authority, conducted rescue operations, recovered the bodies, and processed the cases in accordance with established protocols.
