Islamabad, July 22 (NationPress) A tragic toll has emerged, with at least 221 lives lost and 592 individuals injured across Pakistan due to severe monsoon rains that have sparked flash floods and other disaster-related events since late June, according to the nation's disaster management authority.
As per the latest update on Monday from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), these casualties were reported between June 26 and July 21, including five new fatalities and 10 injuries noted in just the last 24 hours.
The eastern province of Punjab has faced the brunt of the disaster, reporting 135 fatalities and 470 injuries. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a northwestern province, 46 people have died, and 69 others sustained injuries.
In the southern province of Sindh, there have been 22 deaths and 40 injuries. Meanwhile, the southwestern province of Balochistan recorded 16 fatalities and four injuries.
Additionally, the NDMA reported that one child was injured in the Islamabad Capital Territory.
In response to the ongoing rains, authorities have issued flood alerts and are working closely with provincial governments to implement relief efforts and keep a close watch on at-risk areas.
The persistent monsoon has raised concerns, leading to several warnings about moderate to heavy rainfall, increased river levels, and the risk of flash floods in susceptible regions.
The NDMA, alongside the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Punjab, has urged residents to stay alert and steer clear of low-lying and flooded areas.
With monsoon activity, fueled by moisture from the Arabian Sea, still very much present in Punjab, intermittent rain in Lahore has caused a notable rise in humidity levels.
