The attacks — one at an entertainment venue in Lwandle and another at a tavern near Carletonville in Gauteng province — have sent shockwaves through the country and prompted large-scale police operations.

Lwandle Entertainment Venue Attack

At least 10 people were killed and 11 others were injured after armed men opened fire on party-goers at an entertainment venue in Lwandle shortly before 2 a.m. local time on Sunday. According to reports, five people died at the scene while five others succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to hospital. All 11 injured survivors were hospitalised for treatment. Lwandle police have since registered cases of murder and attempted murder against the unidentified suspects.

Carletonville Tavern Massacre

In a separate — and deadlier — incident the previous evening, 17 people, including 13 men and four women, were gunned down and 15 others were seriously injured when suspects opened fire at a tavern in Wedela, near Carletonville in Gauteng province, at around 9.30 p.m. local time on Saturday. The suspects reportedly wielded AK-47s and handguns. All 17 victims died at the scene, emergency responders confirmed.

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said the attackers first targeted patrons outside the tavern before entering the premises and continuing to shoot those inside. 'It is alleged that patrons were drinking inside and outside the tavern when the suspects arrived and opened fire on those outside. The suspects then entered the tavern and continued shooting at patrons inside,' Sibeko was quoted as saying.

Robbery and Escape

After the shooting, the suspects allegedly searched the victims, stealing their mobile phones and other valuables before fleeing in two vehicles. They also reportedly torched two other vehicles parked near the tavern before making their escape. Gauteng police are now hunting at least eight suspects in connection with the Carletonville attack.

Captain Sibeko stated that the motive behind the Carletonville shooting remains unknown at this stage. Gauteng police have deployed a team of detectives and specialised units to trace and arrest the suspects.
