Key Takeaways

  • 280,000 Gazans newly displaced.
  • Overcrowded shelters with flea and mite infestations.
  • Ongoing humanitarian aid blockade.
  • Over 900,000 hot meals served daily.
  • Immediate reopening of border crossings urged.

United Nations, April 4 (NationPress) An estimated 280,000 Gazans have been newly displaced since the escalation of hostilities began over two weeks ago. Many are now seeking refuge in overcrowded shelters that are infested with fleas and mites, as reported by UN humanitarian officials.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) noted that additional Israeli displacement orders have been issued, compelling individuals to flee in search of safety.

OCHA stated, “Increasing numbers of people are moving into the remaining shelters which are already overcrowded.” Reports of flea and mite infestations have emerged, leading to skin rashes and other health problems.

Furthermore, the ongoing aid blockade hampers efforts to address these issues, as there is a lack of necessary materials in Gaza to improve hygiene standards.

OCHA emphasized that the United Nations and its humanitarian partners are striving to meet the significant needs of the population, as conditions permit. The month-long blockade on humanitarian aid and essential goods has deprived the local population of vital necessities. Food supplies within Gaza are swiftly depleting.

Nevertheless, OCHA indicated that food security partners have managed to deliver over 900,000 hot meals daily.

OCHA has called for the immediate reopening of crossings to allow cargo and humanitarian aid into Gaza.

Previously, the Israeli military instructed civilians in various areas of the northern Gaza Strip to evacuate urgently, citing intercepted rocket fire from Palestinian territories.

Military spokesperson Avichay Adraee on Wednesday urged residents to “move immediately west to the shelters in Gaza City,” accusing “terrorist organizations” of launching attacks “from among civilians.”
