Should the International Community Intervene in the Forced Disappearance of Shafiq Zehri in Balochistan?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Quetta, Dec 18 (NationPress) A Baloch human rights advocate has urged the international community to take action regarding the forced disappearance of her brother, Shafiq Zehri, allegedly by Pakistani forces in Balochistan.
This incident occurs amidst a persistent pattern of oppression characterized by an increase in enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and torture throughout the province.
In a video posted on the social media platform X on Thursday by the organization Baloch Voice for Justice (BVJ), Farida Baloch disclosed that her brother, a professor at the Hub Recovery Centre, was abducted by Pakistani intelligence on Wednesday. She emphasized that Shafiq has no ties to illegal activities and is dedicated to education and recovery.
“This act infringes upon fundamental human rights and undermines the rule of law. It specifically targets a defenseless civilian whose sole purpose is to assist his community,” she declared.
Farida called upon international human rights organizations, UN entities, and civil society to respond promptly. She urged the citizens of Balochistan to unite and voice their concerns, demanding Shafiq's immediate and safe return.
In response to the incident, another rights organization, Paank, part of the Baloch National Movement's Human Rights Department, condemned the act, stating, “This reflects a form of collective punishment intended to silence dissent. Paank holds the authorities accountable for Shafiq’s wellbeing and insists on his immediate release, calling for national and international human rights organizations to address this serious violation.”
In a related case of extrajudicial killing in Balochistan, the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) reported on Tuesday that the mutilated body of Khalil Ahmed, an employee of Pakistan’s police and a resident of the Panjgur district, was found on December 13 in the Chakul Kalag area, shortly after his enforced disappearance by Pakistani intelligence and security forces.
“The murder of Khalil Ahmed raises serious alarms regarding the deterioration of the rule of law and the escalating threat to human life in Balochistan. His enforced disappearance and consequent death exemplify the ongoing cycle of violence and impunity, where even state employees are not immune. This scenario necessitates urgent international scrutiny and accountability to avert further human rights abuses and collective suffering,” the BYC noted.
