This sentiment was echoed by senior officials during the 15th edition of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo taking place in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.
As highlighted by industry leaders, innovative technologies such as big data, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence (AI) have fundamentally transformed the tourism and travel landscape, offering substantial advantages to both investors and travelers.
Clara Chinwe Okoro, the founder and COO of My Beautiful Africa, a travel tech firm from Nigeria, noted that Africa is increasingly attracting tech-savvy tourists, which emphasizes the need for the sector to embrace automation, according to reports from Xinhua news agency.
"Enhanced connectivity not only streamlines booking processes but also enriches the travel experience at various destinations throughout the continent. We can utilize digital tools to effectively highlight our stunning attractions," Okoro stated.
Kalkidan Mulugeta, co-founder of ClearSkies Technology from Ethiopia, emphasized that digital solutions could enhance the resilience, sustainability, and global competitiveness of Africa's tourism sector.
Mulugeta encouraged investors to tap into cyberspace for marketing new offerings, automating booking and payment systems, while ensuring robust data security for travelers.
He further added that the integration of emerging technologies like drones and AI could help tourism professionals lessen their carbon footprints, minimize waste, and develop resilient brands.
Francis Muriithi, group head of technology governance and assurance at Kenya Commercial Bank Group, stated that investors in Africa’s tourism sector can utilize sophisticated digital tools to gain valuable insights into travelers’ preferences.
Muriithi advocated for the expansion of digital payment systems across the continent in conjunction with the introduction of micro-insurance products to safeguard the sector from climate-related challenges.
The Magical Kenya Travel Expo, running through Friday, assembles over 6,500 participants from 40 countries worldwide, including senior policymakers and tourism investors.
This three-day event, themed "Magical Kenya: Unlocking Africa's Potential through Sustainable Tourism," includes panel discussions, business matchmaking, and exhibitions.
