How Can African FMs Foster Continental Unity Amid Declining Multilateralism?

Key Takeaways
Addis Ababa, Feb 11 (NationPress) African foreign ministers convened on Wednesday to advocate for a strong sense of continental unity and collaboration, in light of the diminishing multilateralism and global cooperation. This appeal was voiced during the inaugural session of the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU) at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
"The shifting geopolitical environment, where multilateralism and global cooperation are fading, negatively impacts peace and security across our continent," stated Ethiopian Minister of Foreign Affairs Gedion Timothewos, according to Xinhua News Agency.
He pointed out that intense competition for technological leadership, control over vital mineral resources, and key logistics routes are increasingly defining international relations, where political and security issues often overshadow trade and economic collaboration.
Timothewos further noted that the current global context exacerbates challenges to peace and security, as the continent faces incidents of unconstitutional governmental changes, undermining the AU's foundational principles.
"For our continent to safeguard itself from potential predatory agendas, African unity must be genuine and the AU robust," Timothewos emphasized. "We require not just the goodwill of others but true partnerships, which necessitate strength derived from unity."
Angolan Minister of External Relations and Chairperson of the Executive Council, Tete Antonio, underscored the importance of enhancing the AU's institutional framework and operational capacity to create a sustainable, united, and responsive AU that can effectively address the continent's priorities through shared responsibility and cooperation among member states.
The executive council meeting, attended by foreign ministers from AU member states under the framework of the 39th AU Summit, is themed: "Ensuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063."
This two-day meeting is set to evaluate the draft agenda and decisions for the upcoming 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU, scheduled for February 14-15.
