Washington, Nov 4 (NationPress) Airports throughout the United States are facing increasing disruptions as the federal government shutdown surpasses the one-month mark. Staffing shortages are significantly contributing to widespread flight delays and lengthy security lines.
This past weekend saw some of the most severe travel disruptions since the onset of the shutdown, with over 5,000 flights delayed to and from US airports on Sunday alone.
The White House attributed these travel issues to the Democrats, asserting that "Americans are paying the price for Democrats’ sick political games."
“Democrats have ushered in a full-scale disaster disrupting millions of air travelers’ lives,” it stated in an official announcement.
With no end in sight, transportation officials cautioned that further delays and cancellations are anticipated.
Air traffic controllers, classified as essential workers, are mandated to work without pay, leading to heightened financial stress. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy remarked, “None of them can miss two paychecks. Their home finances fall apart, and they’re all going to have to look at taking second jobs or quitting and getting into another line of work.”
He further noted that the national airspace system is currently understaffed by 2,000 to 3,000 controllers.
By Monday afternoon, over 2,530 flights were delayed and more than 60 were canceled, as per FlightAware data.
Major disruptions were concentrated at key airports like Chicago O’Hare, Newark Liberty, John F. Kennedy International Airport, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which together accounted for more than 800 delays and over 30 cancellations.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has struggled to recruit and retain sufficient controllers, and staffing-related delays were evident even before the shutdown.
This crisis has also impacted airport security operations. Houston Airports cautioned that security wait times could exceed three hours at George Bush Intercontinental Airport and more than an hour at William P. Hobby Airport. Similar warnings have been issued for airports in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, Washington, DC, and other major urban areas.
The Republicans have accused Democrats of demanding healthcare subsidies for illegal immigrants, a claim that Democrats have dismissed as a false narrative propagated by the Trump administration.
Democrats assert that they are advocating to reverse healthcare cuts for American citizens in the "Big Beautiful Bill," which was enacted earlier this year.
