Arab Nations Reinforce Dedication to Women's Empowerment at Muscat Summit

Beirut, Dec 10 (NationPress) Oman hosted a significant regional summit on Monday to evaluate the advancements in executing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, nearly 30 years since its inception, as stated by the Lebanon-based UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA).

The summit, which saw the participation of ministers, officials, civil society members, and UN agencies, culminated in the Muscat Declaration, reaffirming the commitment of Arab nations to enhance women's rights in alignment with the Beijing framework, as reported by Xinhua.

The Omani Minister of Social Development, Laila Al Najjar, underscored the advancements made in Oman regarding laws and regulations that ensure the safeguarding of women's rights.

ESCWA Executive Secretary Rola Dashti pointed out that over 100 legislative amendments have been introduced across Arab countries in the last two years to bolster women's rights, but she recognized the persistent challenges, particularly the repercussions of armed conflicts affecting 15 million women in the region.

Talks concentrated on addressing violence against women, enhancing women's economic participation, promoting their roles in decision-making, and protecting women during conflicts. UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous emphasized that true sustainable development and peace necessitate the full empowerment of women and urged the transformation of commitments into meaningful actions.

Established in 1995, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action continues to serve as a global framework for promoting women's rights and achieving gender equality.
