Addis Ababa, Feb 17 (NationPress) The outgoing Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has urged for enhanced continental solidarity amidst escalating global uncertainties.
During his concluding speech at the 38th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government, marking the end of his eight-year tenure, Faki remarked that the swift and intense geopolitical turmoil witnessed over the last eight years had both violent and destabilising effects.
He emphasized the repercussions of the abrupt decline in health circumstances due to the COVID-19 outbreak, alongside other significant public health emergencies and major economic and diplomatic challenges, on Africa's socio-economic and political stability, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Faki pointed out that the ongoing crisis in Ukraine has further clouded this situation, indicating a shift in global geopolitical dynamics. He stated that the ramifications of this crisis have significantly impacted Africa, which relies heavily on imports of grains and agricultural inputs from Russia and Ukraine.
He noted, “The threat of food and health insecurity looms over many of our nations, most of which continue to grapple with their inherent structural vulnerabilities.”
Additionally, the outgoing AU Commission leader reaffirmed his commitment to the achievement of Africa's key socio-economic development goals under the AU's framework.
The two-day AU Summit, themed for the year 2025: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations”, took place from Saturday to Sunday at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
