Canberra, Nov 25 (NationPress) The Australian government has unveiled a substantial funding increase of nearly 40 percent for the national helpline dedicated to supporting individuals affected by domestic, family, and sexual violence, addressing the heightened demand for these essential services.
Minister for Social Services Tanya Plibersek, Minister for Women Katy Gallagher, and Assistant Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence Ged Kearney revealed an additional 41.8 million Australian dollars (approximately 27.03 million US dollars) aimed at enhancing the capacity of 1800RESPECT, which provides free information, counseling, and support to Australians facing domestic, family, or sexual violence, according to reports from Xinhua news agency.
This new funding brings the total allocation for 1800RESPECT to 146.8 million Australian dollars until June 30, 2027.
Since its launch in 2010, 1800RESPECT has experienced a staggering increase in contacts, exceeding 3,000 percent. In the year leading up to June 2025, the service received over 342,000 calls, video calls, online chats, and texts, with demand anticipated to keep rising as more Australians become aware of the signs of violence and look for help.
The ministers stated in a joint statement that this additional funding will ensure that 1800RESPECT can continue to offer trauma-informed, accessible support for those encountering family, domestic, and sexual violence.
This funding announcement coincided with the United Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, they noted.
As per the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, one in six Australian women and one in 18 men have experienced physical or sexual violence from a current or former cohabiting partner since the age of 15.
In 2023, incidents of family and domestic violence constituted 55 percent of all recorded assaults in Australia, with 43 percent of recorded murders linked to family and domestic violence.
