Dhaka, June 16 (NationPress) The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has called upon the interim government to formally notify the Election Commission (EC) regarding its decision to conduct national elections in February 2026. This resolution was reached during a meeting between Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus and Acting BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman in London last week.
During an address at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed emphasized that informing the EC would allow the party to relay the government's directive on the elections to the public.
"We anticipate that the interim government will initiate the necessary steps for a democratic transition, and that the decision from the London meeting will be communicated to the Election Commission through the proper channels soon," UNB reported Ahmed as stating.
Additionally, while addressing the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2025-2026, Salahuddin remarked on the rising inflation in the country and criticized the Yunus-led government for failing to implement measures to mitigate it.
"A period of ten months is sufficient to prepare a budget. Even an elected government doesn’t typically work on a budget for a full twelve months, focusing instead on it three to four months prior to its announcement," he noted.
Bangladesh continues to face political strife and instability, and on Friday, Yunus convened a meeting with Tarique Rahman at a London hotel during his visit to the United Kingdom, which analysts have described as a damp squib.
The much-anticipated discussion occurred amidst escalating tensions among political factions regarding the scheduling of national elections.
A joint statement released post-meeting indicated that Rahman suggested to Yunus that elections should take place before Ramadan in 2026, a sentiment echoed by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Conversely, Yunus stated that he has already proclaimed elections for the first half of April 2026. However, he mentioned that if all preparations are finalized, the elections could potentially occur in the week preceding Ramadan in 2026, stressing that significant progress must be made on reforms and justice by that time.
Ramadan is anticipated to commence in mid-February next year, while top BNP leaders previously insisted on parliamentary elections by December of this year.
This meeting marked Tarique Rahman's first private engagement with Yunus since he relocated to London in September 2008.
Recently, Yunus announced that the next national elections would occur "on a day in April" next year.
"I am declaring to the citizens that the next national elections will be held on a day in the first half of April 2026," Yunus stated in a televised address to the nation ahead of Eid.
He added that the Election Commission would unveil a detailed election roadmap at an "appropriate time".
However, various political entities swiftly condemned the announcement.
Earlier, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir remarked to local media in Dhaka that April is "not suitable in any way" for conducting national elections.
"April is not an appropriate month for polls in Bangladesh. There is a likelihood of extreme heat, storms, and rains during that period. Additionally, it follows Ramadan, and public examinations are also scheduled," Alamgir explained.
