Paro-Thimphu, Nov 12 (NationPress) A remarkable sight unfolded as thousands of Bhutanese citizens, ranging from young schoolchildren to elderly residents, gathered in unison along a 45-kilometre stretch from Paro International Airport to Thimphu, forming a vibrant corridor of affection for Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.

With Indian and Bhutanese flags waving proudly, they applauded, cheered, and showered flower petals as the motorcade glided by, transforming the picturesque mountain route into a celebration of camaraderie.

Youth groups created human chains at pivotal spots, displaying banners that proclaimed “Welcome to Devbhoomi’s Friend” and “India-Bhutan Forever.”

Along the route, families constructed makeshift welcome arches adorned with marigolds and prayer flags. Traditional Bhutanese dancers entertained with cultural performances at roadside stops, while monks offered prayers for the esteemed visitor’s well-being.

Local school bands played both nations’ national anthems, and residents presented khadar scarves and butter tea to the convoy’s personnel.

At the airport, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay warmly welcomed PM Modi with a grand red-carpet ceremony. The tarmac was lined with honour guards in traditional gho and kira, while a 21-gun salute resonated throughout the valley. Children presented bouquets, and a cultural troupe showcased the auspicious Tashi Lebey dance.

The enthusiastic turnout exemplified profound grassroots affection, with many traveling hours from remote dzongkhags to witness the occasion. Social media erupted with videos of the “human welcome chain,” trending under #ModiInBhutan.

Later, PM Modi took part in the celebrations for the 70th birth anniversary of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo and the Global Peace Prayer Festival. He met with the King and the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, reiterating India’s commitment to Bhutan’s 13th Five-Year Plan and the Gelephu Mindfulness City vision.

The leaders inaugurated the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, exchanged MoUs in sectors like renewable energy, health, and mental wellness, and announced a significant Rs 4000-crore Line of Credit.

Moreover, an Immigration Check Post at Hatisar, Assam, was promised to enhance connectivity. This visit, reflecting India’s Neighbourhood First policy, concluded with prayers at the Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha, symbolizing shared spiritual ties and a reinforced partnership.
