Dhaka, April 2 (NationPress) The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) along with its associated groups obstructed the Bhola-Velumia road on Wednesday as a form of protest against the passing of its leader.

The individual who passed away, Jamal Uddin Howlader, served as the BNP Ward president of the Velumia Union and lost his life during a violent altercation concerning a land dispute in the Bhola district, according to local news reports.

The conflict unfolded on Tuesday when two opposing factions, led by Muhammad Ibrahim and Muhammad Alam from Kunjapatti village, clashed over land rights.

As the situation intensified, the BNP leader intervened in an attempt to mediate but suffered a fatal injury. After being rushed to a private clinic in Barisal, he was pronounced dead by medical professionals.

BNP General Secretary of Velumia Union, Muhammad Nurul Islam, informed Bangladesh’s prominent daily, Prothom Alo, that Jamal Uddin had gone to defuse the conflict between the two groups. However, he was struck on the head by the son of Ibrahim Rari, resulting in severe injuries. Local residents, along with BNP leaders and supporters, have initiated protests demanding justice in this case.

“We have not received any complaints from either side regarding this incident. If a complaint is filed, we will take appropriate action. The body will be transferred to the morgue for an autopsy,” stated Bhola Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abu Shahadat Muhammad Hachanain Parvez.

Since the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus took office in August 2024, Bangladesh has been experiencing significant unrest and demonstrations. Numerous protest marches have occurred recently, calling for the resignation of Home Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
