Quetta, April 24 (NationPress) The Balochistan National Party (BNP) has criticized the Pakistani government for its unfair treatment of Baloch women, pointing out that many have been incarcerated merely for advocating their rights, as reported by local media.

During a recent public gathering on Wednesday in Khuzdar, BNP chief Akhtar Mengal stated that the increasing political consciousness among Baloch women has left the ruling elite feeling threatened.

"Our women in Balochistan have become so enlightened that the authorities are losing their rest over it. They fear the Baloch. Our party stepped down from the assemblies to champion Baloch rights. We sought to address the challenges in this area through political channels, but the situation has only deteriorated," Mengal expressed.

"The rally in Khuzdar today is unlike previous ones. The attendance of thousands here indicates that the people of Balochistan are very much alive," he added.

He subsequently announced that the BNP plans to hold another rally in Quetta on May 2, emphasizing the call for justice, as per the leading newspaper, Dawn.

Last week, Mengal terminated a 20-day-long sit-in protest in the Mastung district against the detainment of Baloch activists, citing concerns over its effects on local traders.

The party initiated a long march to protest the arrest of Baloch Yekjehti Committee (BYC) chief organizer Mahrang Baloch, along with other leaders and activists, amid police crackdowns during a sit-in.

"We advocate for a peaceful struggle. This does not signify the end of our movement but will lead to a public outreach initiative," Mengal stated during a press briefing in Mastung.

He revealed that the party intends to organize rallies and protests at the district level throughout Balochistan in the following days.

In a related development, earlier this week, BYC leader Mahrang Baloch's attorney, Imran Baloch, confirmed that the Balochistan government has prolonged Mahrang's detention for an additional 30 days after alleging her involvement in terrorism, sedition, and murder, as per a report by the prominent Pakistani daily, The Express Tribune.

Mahrang was apprehended on March 22 after participating in a sit-in protest in Quetta against the unlawful arrests and police remand of the relatives of victims of enforced disappearances.

Initially detained for 30 days, her lawyer stated, "the government has issued another notification ordering to extend her detention for an additional 30 days."
