Brazil Remains Vigilant Amid Storm and Flood Warnings

Sao Paulo, Dec 9 (NationPress) The state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil is on high alert for intense storms that have caused widespread flooding, landslides, and evacuations in 22 municipalities, according to the country's civil defense authority.

The city of Joinville, Santa Catarina's largest urban area, has been grappling with flooding since Thursday, with weather forecasts predicting that the rain will continue until Tuesday morning, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

As per the agency's report, Dionisio Cerqueira has experienced the highest rainfall, totaling 186.4 mm in the last 48 hours, significantly increasing the risk of landslides.

The agency has issued warnings regarding possible meteorological events with a moderate to high risk.

A weather front advancing from central South America towards the Atlantic has instigated the storms affecting Santa Catarina.

In May and June, severe storms previously resulted in flooding in the neighboring state of Rio Grande do Sul, leading to 183 fatalities and impacting over 90 percent of the area.
