United Nations, May 15 (NationPress) The principle of the middle path articulated by Buddha is particularly significant during these times of global instability, stated India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, P. Harish, during the celebration of Vesak.
"The teachings of Lord Buddha can serve as a guiding light amid today's uncertainties," he remarked.
"The concept of moderation—known as the middle path—is more essential than ever. Buddha's teachings, while simple, hold profound wisdom that encourages us to rise above our differences and foster a universal bond of loving kindness," he added.
The chamber of the UN's Economic and Social Council echoed with the chants of monks and nuns clad in ochre and white robes, invoking the blessings of the Buddha for global peace during the Commemoration of International Day of Vesak 2025, co-hosted by Thailand and Sri Lanka.
In a video message to the assembly, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed, "The teachings of the Buddha concerning compassion, tolerance, and selfless service deeply align with the values upheld by the United Nations."
"In this age of significant global challenges, these enduring principles must steer our collective journey forward," he emphasized.
Harish remarked that India is the birthplace of Buddhism, stating, "Vesak provides us an opportunity to celebrate the shared heritage of Buddhism and to reaffirm the cultural and civilizational connections that unite the nations in our region."
He highlighted how Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visits to Buddhist sites in Thailand and Sri Lanka last month underscored this shared heritage.
During the trip to Thailand, Harish noted that Prime Minister Modi visited the Wat Pho temple in Bangkok alongside Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, where he honored the statue of the Reclining Buddha and made offerings to senior monks.
While in Sri Lanka, PM Modi prayed at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi temple in Anuradhapura with Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Harish noted.
This temple is of great significance to India's civilizational ties with Sri Lanka, he said.
The temple features a tree that originated from a cutting of the sacred bo tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
On Thursday, India’s UN Mission will host a meeting titled 'Teachings of Gautama Buddha - A Path to Internal and Global Peace'.
