Sacramento, Nov 13 (NationPress) - The former chief of staff to California Governor Gavin Newsom, Dana Williamson, was taken into custody in Sacramento following charges brought by a federal grand jury in a public corruption investigation, as reported by the US Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California.
According to prosecutors, the case against Williamson emerged from a comprehensive three-year inquiry involving the FBI and US tax authorities, as outlined in a press release from the office.
Court documents reveal that between February 2022 and September 2024, Williamson and her associates misappropriated approximately $225,000 from a dormant political campaign account, rerouting the funds for personal use by disguising it as salary for what was described as a "no-show job."
The funds originated from an inactive campaign account associated with Xavier Becerra, a former California attorney general who later became the US secretary of health and human services. Notably, Becerra has not been implicated in the indictment, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Furthermore, Williamson is charged with falsely claiming over $1 million in business deductions for personal luxuries, which prosecutors categorize as extravagant expenditures, including private jet travel, upscale hotel accommodations, home furnishings, and designer handbags on her tax filings.
She faces multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud, bank fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the United States, obstructing justice, subscribing to false tax returns, and making false statements.
If found guilty, Williamson could confront a prison sentence of up to 20 years for the most severe charges, as indicated by prosecutors.
Williamson held the position of Newsom's chief of staff from late 2022 until late 2024, previously serving as a Cabinet secretary for former California governor Jerry Brown and as campaign manager during Becerra's 2018 run for state attorney general.
In response to the situation, a spokesperson for Newsom stated, "Ms. Williamson no longer serves in this administration. While we are still gathering information on the allegations, the Governor insists that all public servants maintain the highest standards of integrity."
