Beijing (China), Nov 13 (NationPress) The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Kirsty Coventry, has disclosed that the organization is currently reassessing its anticipated entry into Esports and that a specialized group is evaluating the involvement of transgender women in order to safeguard the female category.
During her discussion with Xinhua on her recent visit to China, Coventry mentioned that her tenure, which commenced in June, has entered a phase she describes as "Pause and Reflect." She stated, "On June 24, I initiated my presidency emphasizing the need to pause, reflect, and analyze whether we are prepared for the future."
Coventry explained that this methodology emphasizes collaboration and listening. "A successful team is built when every individual feels they are achieving success," she remarked. "Much of this process involves listening and gathering collective input from all parties involved."
Under her initiative, titled "Fit for the Future," which was launched in September, the IOC has established four working groups concentrating on the Youth Olympic Games, the Olympic program, commercial partnerships, and the safeguarding of the female category.
Coventry also discussed the IOC's recent decision to terminate its partnership with Saudi Arabia's Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the Esports World Cup Foundation, which had been aiming to introduce the Olympic Esports Games.
"We mutually recognized the necessity to reassess several aspects," she noted. "There is immense potential, but uncertainties remain regarding implementation and what that may entail," she added.
The Zimbabwean leader indicated that a smaller internal team is currently reviewing how the IOC could responsibly enter the Esports arena. "We must be exceptionally clear, as this is uncharted territory for us," she stated, pointing out the ongoing discussions about whether to restrict participation to only sports-themed games.
Regarding rumors of a forthcoming ban on transgender women in international competitions, Coventry mentioned that the topic is still under expert evaluation. "We have established a working group to examine the protection of the female category," she said. "This is a medically driven and scientific dialogue."
She emphasized that the process is not yet complete. "Some individuals might be jumping to conclusions. We must allow the experts to conclude their work and provide us with their recommendations."
