Will South Korea Start Cash Handouts to Citizens on July 21?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, July 5 (NationPress) South Korea is set to commence the distribution of cash handouts to all citizens starting on July 21, as part of a government initiative designed to invigorate domestic consumption, officials announced on Saturday.
This decision follows the Cabinet's endorsement of a 31.8 trillion-won ($23.3 billion) supplementary budget, which was approved by the National Assembly the previous day. The handout program is a fundamental element of the first supplementary budget under the Lee Jae Myung administration.
According to the plan, all South Korean citizens residing in the country as of June 18 will be eligible for a one-time payment of 150,000 won. The government has stated that this extensive distribution aims to enhance consumer spending across the nation.
Furthermore, additional targeted support will be available based on income criteria.
Individuals from near-poverty households and single-parent families will receive 300,000 won, while those on the basic living allowance will be allocated 400,000 won.
To foster balanced regional development, citizens living outside the greater Seoul area, including Gyeonggi Province and Incheon, will receive an additional 30,000 won. Residents in 84 designated rural and fishing communities facing population decline will be granted an extra 50,000 won.
A subsequent round of payments is scheduled between September 22 and October 31, offering an additional 100,000 won to the bottom 90% of income earners.
Eligibility will be determined through a comprehensive income screening based on national health insurance premiums, with specific criteria to be revealed in September, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
“We will make thorough preparations for the effective rollout of these payments, ensuring they act as a catalyst for economic recovery by enhancing consumption and supporting vulnerable groups,” stated Vice Interior Minister Kim Min-jae, who leads the interagency task force in charge of the program.
Citizens will have the flexibility to receive the handouts through credit or debit cards, prepaid cards, or local government-issued gift certificates, ensuring accessibility across various platforms.
