Seoul, March 12 (NationPress) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Thursday called upon his aides to promptly prepare an additional budget aimed at stabilizing the livelihoods of citizens and fostering economic recovery, as the country faces potential repercussions from escalating conflicts in the Middle East.

During a meeting with senior aides, Lee expressed his worries that increasing instability in the region might dampen consumer confidence and investment enthusiasm.

"We must act quickly to infuse funds to maintain the momentum for both the livelihood of our citizens and economic recovery, particularly during turbulent times," Lee stated. "A supplementary budget is essential, and I request that it be formulated as swiftly as possible," as reported by Yonhap News Agency.

The President urged officials to expedite the drafting of the supplementary budget, which typically takes one to two months.

"We require not only the wisdom to navigate the current crisis affecting people's livelihoods but also to transform this challenge into an opportunity for significant national progress," Lee emphasized.

He highlighted that the adverse effects of a declining economy disproportionately impact vulnerable populations, exacerbating social inequality.

"This is a critical moment to mitigate the economic shock on citizens' livelihoods, and we must leverage all available policy measures," he asserted.

Lee mandated a review of numerous measures, including freezing public utility rates in the first half of the year, increasing discounts on agricultural, livestock, and fishery products, as well as providing fuel subsidies for farmers and extending fuel tax reductions.

Furthermore, Lee noted that the National Assembly was anticipated to approve a special bill concerning South Korea's USD 350 billion investment commitment to the United States later that day.

"I urge both the ruling and opposition parties to unite so that this crisis can serve as an opportunity for a profound transformation within our economy and industries," Lee remarked, expressing gratitude to the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) for their collaboration.

The legislation outlines the necessary procedures for implementing Seoul's investments in the US, which includes executing various memorandums of understanding and creating a "strategic investment fund" for the $350 billion initiative.

Point of View

The urgency displayed by President Lee highlights the need for swift economic measures in the face of international instability.
