Bogota, Aug 11 (NationPress) - The Colombian senator and presidential aspirant, Miguel Uribe Turbay, passed away on Monday, over two months following a shooting incident during a political rally in Bogota.
The 39-year-old Turbay was shot on June 7 at a rally held in El Golfito Park, located in the Fontibon area of Bogota. He was rushed to a nearby medical facility and later transferred to the Santa Fe Foundation for emergency surgery due to severe injuries. Reports from El Espectador indicate he remained in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) during his hospitalization.
The senator sustained three gunshot wounds: one to his left knee and two to his torso. Despite receiving treatment at the Santa Fe Foundation, his condition deteriorated this weekend due to an intracranial hemorrhage.
Turbay's bodyguards apprehended the alleged shooter, a 15-year-old boy, who reportedly used a nine-millimeter Glock pistol to fire eight shots, three of which critically injured the presidential candidate. The young suspect was also injured during the pursuit that led to his capture and is currently receiving medical treatment in Bogota.
A judge has formalized the arrest of the alleged attacker, and the Prosecutor's Office has charged him with illegal possession of firearms and attempted murder, charges he has denied, according to El Espectador. The suspect is being held in a facility where he will serve the sentence imposed by the judge.
Investigators have conducted around 30 interviews and examined hundreds of hours of surveillance footage in an effort to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. To date, no information has surfaced regarding who may have orchestrated the attack or who might be behind it.
Miguel Uribe Turbay was born on January 28, 1986, in Bogota to a politically active family. He attended Los Nogales High School and later pursued a law degree at the University of the Andes, where he also earned a Master's degree in Public Policy.
At just 25 years old, Turbay was elected as a Councillor for Bogota in 2012 by the Liberal Party, marking the beginning of his political journey. In 2015, he was appointed Secretary of Government by former Bogota Mayor Enrique Penalosa. Although he ran for Mayor of Bogota in 2018, he was unsuccessful.
In 2021, the Democratic Center party nominated Miguel Uribe Turbay as its lead candidate for the Senate. He won a seat in Colombia's Senate in the 2022 elections, garnering 223,167 votes. He married Maria Claudia Tarazona in 2016, and the couple has one child together.
